More about this year's event
October 23-31 is Red Ribbon Week
A time to show your support for creating a drug-free community. Join parents, schools, and organizations across the nation to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse by wearing a red ribbon. Red Ribbon Week is the perfect opportunity to talk with kids about drugs. No matter how young children are, talking with them is one of the best things you can do to help keep them drug free. |
In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, Fayette County Drug and Alcohol Commission, Inc. (FCDAC, Inc.) is holding its 4th Annual Red Ribbon

THE HISTORY OF RED RIBBON WEEK:
While National Red Ribbon Week brings substance abuse to the forefront, it also commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was kidnapped and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. So, this Red Ribbon Week lets take a moment to remember Camerena for his dedication and inspiration. In Camarena's home town of Calexico, CA, a public outpouring of support turned in to an organized community response in which citizens began to wear red ribbons. Soon parents and students took Camarena as their role model and embracing his belief that one person can make a difference, adopted the symbol of his memory-the Red Ribbon. They became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of legal drugs in America.
In 1988, the National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign, an eight-day event proclaimed by the U.S. Congress and chaired by then President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. The Red Ribbon Campaign has now reached millions in effort to protect all from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs.
