Resources for Preventing Underage and Dangerous Drinking
Take advantage of this time to talk about underage drinking. Start talking to your youth early to ensure they understand what alcohol is and the risks of underage drinking. Though it may not seem like it, youth really hear your concerns.
Talk with your youth about what to do when faced with a difficult decision about alcohol. Come up with a plan together to avoid drinking, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how to say “no thanks” in a safe environment.
Make it part of the routine to talk about alcohol and underage drinking. While you are dropping off your child talk with them about what to do if they are faced with a decision about alcohol and other drugs. Regularly check in with them about their exit plan or refusal strategies.
